What is Ballistic Steel?

Ballistic steel — sometimes called armor or protection steel — is a specialized form of high-hardness alloy steel engineered to resist penetration from high-velocity projectiles and other extreme threats. 

At its core, ballistic steel is a martensitic, quenched and tempered steel that balances high strength, hardness, and toughness. The manufacturing process typically involves heating the steel to the austenitic phase (often in the range of 700-900 °C), then rapidly cooling (quenching) to lock in a hardened microstructure. A subsequent tempering step reduces brittleness and restores some ductility for use in impact situations.

In terms of material composition, ballistic steels often contain alloying elements such as carbon, manganese, nickel and chromium. These help improve hardenability, toughness (especially at low temperatures), and corrosion resistance, respectively.

Key properties that distinguish ballistic steel from conventional structural steel include:

High hardness: enabling it to resist penetration from bullets or shrapnel. 
High toughness: so the steel can absorb and dissipate energy rather than simply shatter. 
Durability and multi-hit capability: which means it can sustain multiple impacts while maintaining integrity. 
Strength-to-weight advantage compared to non-hardened plates: in some cases ballistic steel allows thinner plates to provide the same level of protection as a much thicker conventional plate.
